Course Synopsis
The Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations (PUWER) applies to the provision of all work equipment, including toolbox tools, laboratory apparatus, ladders, lifting and mobile work equipment. PUWER applies to all workplaces and work situations where the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 applies.
This 3 day ST&L course, accredited by City & Guilds, is designed to give you the skills and knowledge to carry out and conduct PUWER inspections on your machinery. Our training team will explain your obligations in order t o meet the legal requirements of the Regulations. During this course we will outline when PUWER inspections should be carried out and what they should contain. You will gain a better understanding of the PUWER Approved Code of Practice (ACOP) and how this document can help you meet your legal obligations.
PUWER inspections are normally based around European and International standards as they can, if followed correctly, provide a presumed level of compliance. European and International standards are not law but provide the best way of showing you have fulfilled your legal obligations in complying with PUWER and the Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC. The course will outline some of the most common European and International standards to ensure that you implement practical, effective and compliant control measures.
Risk assessment is an integral part of the machinery safety process. The course will cover risk estimation, evaluation and reduction using the Preliminary Hazard Analysis system (PHA). The course will include working examples from real life scenarios to ensure that you leave with a good understanding of how to carry out risk assessments on machinery in your work place.
To some people, conducting a PUWER inspection on their own machines can be quite a daunting task at first, so we at ST&L will provide you with a PUWER checklist. This easy to follow checklist will offer step by step guidance when carrying out your practical inspections.
Throughout this course there will be plenty of practical examples and lots of pictorial references to real life situations in order to underpin and expand your knowledge base of this subject. This course will identify key issues which may arise when purchasing new equipment or machinery giving you the information to make sure that your new machinery will be PUWER compliant.
You are required to complete practical and theory tests. The practical test will be conducted on a machine of your choice using the ST&L PUWER Checklist and Risk Assessment documents. The theory test is divided in to two sections, a written test paper consisting of 20 multiple choice questions and 5 Risk Assessment scenarios.
